10,000 Steps A Day
I'm sure you've all heard that you should walk 10,000 steps a day. Oprah, Dr. Oz, all of your own doctors, exercise gurus, etc.... they all recommend 10K steps each day.
I can't believe that I haven't blogged about this before now. I've now been making 10,000 steps a day for over a year! My friends and I began on this mission on April 9, 2009, by the leadership of Dr.Morinishi (and of course, his wife, Shari), who has recommended this form of exercise to his patients. Of course, I've missed a few days here and there, but I've always made up for the missed steps (My friend, Val, hasn't missed a single day! Go Val!) In fact, the new mission became 1 million steps every quarter (which is an average of over 11,000 steps a day!) For every complete quarter since April 9th, I've made my million steps!
Dr. Morinishi has seen improvements in the health of his patients who are walking. He's seen drops in weight, clothing sizes, blood pressure, heart rate, cholesterol levels (both total and LDL) and fasting blood sugar. He's also witnessed the disappearance of pre-diabetic conditions.
We use the Omron pedometers (model HJ112) which calculates steps, aerobic steps, calories and mileage each day. It has a seven day memory and we log our steps on a google spreadsheet. Email me if you are interested in logging your steps with us. It's fun, cheap, and a good way to stay motivated! You can buy these pedometers online for about $25. We last found the best price on amazon.com. If you become a spreadsheet user, you'll see some participants make 20,000 steps a day!! Woo-Hoo.....
It's nearly summer and what better way to begin the summer with an exercise program!
Keep on walking.... love ya, nancy
